My pet

I think that it is very important to have a pet at home. And it absolutely does not matter, what kind of animal it is. It can be: a cat, a dog, a hamster, a parrot or even a gold fish. Cats and dogs are the most popular pets in many countries. People who live in flats prefer to keep cats, because there is no need to walk them every day. Cats are very compact animals, they like to lie on people’s laps and even in beds. I love cats because they are warm and fluffy. Cats let us stroke them and often purr with pleasure. For me cats are the most incredible and mystic animals.

Dogs are a man's best friends and that is the fact. Dogs are extremely clever and understand everything you tell them. Though keeping a dog in a flat is a bit of a problem, because you need to walk it two or three times a day. And this takes some time. Another problem is that our flats are relatively small even for not big dogs. And do not forget that dogs have a specific smell. But these are no real problems when you really love dogs. Dogs are wonderful animals. I am absolutely sure that cats and dogs have human souls.

In eastern countries cats and dogs are exotic pets. People there mostly keep birds. These birds are usually smaller than parrots. People live in tiny flats and houses and there is simply not enough room to place a big cage. As for me, I love big birds and parrots. Another reason for keeping birds is that cities in eastern countries are overpopulated, so there are not enough parks and squares. And do not forget, that Asian people can use cats and dogs as food!

Personally I do not understand when people keep small fishes. What is the point in all this? Fish do not speak. You cannot touch it. Well there are big beautiful fishes that are at least pleasant to look at. Keeping fish is a very difficult and money demanding process. Without paying all the necessary attention to your fish they can soon die.

People usually keep hamsters, rabbits, rats and mice to teach their children to communicate with animals. Besides, these animals are rather easy to look after. These animals are funny, but all they do is eating and multiplying.

It is very interesting when somebody has exotic pets, such as spiders, cockroaches, snakes and frogs. But one has got to be a real professional. Otherwise the animals will die or do harm to somebody. I would choose to keep frogs. I think them really nice. And some frogs have beautiful voices.

So, you can choose any pet. But you just must love it! I cannot understand how people can live without pets.

My friend

I have a lot of friends. Most of them are classmates. My best friend called Andrey. He is fourteen. He lives with his parents not far from the school.

Andrey has a lot of hobbies: he likes to play the computer, to read detective stories, to collect butterflies. He likes animals, espesially cats. He has got a cat Lastik at home.

Andrey has short, light hair and grey eyes. He is quite short and rather thin. He always manages to be cheerful, energetic, full of life and energy. He is helpful and honest.

Andrey is very popular. H is a helpful person and every time he tries to do her best to help somebody when he has problems.

Andrey is very attentive to his parents. Of course, he has some drawbacks - sometimes she is a hurly-burly boy, a bit stubborn. But still like him as she has a good sense of humour and pleasant to deal with.

We spend much time together - watch video or listen to the music, walk or go to the cafe discussing all sorts of things. Our friendship helps me feel strong and sure of myself.

Про квартиру

My flat

We have a nice flat in a new block of flats. Our flat is on the fifth floor of a nine-storied building. It has all modem conveniences: central heating, running hot and cold water, electricity, gas, a lift and a chute to carry rubbish down.

We have a three-room flat which consists of a living-room, a bedroom, a study (which is also my room), a kitchen, a bath-room and a toilet. There are also two closets in our flat. Our flat has two balconies.

The living-room is the largest and most comfortable one in the flat. In the middle of the room we have a square dinner-table with six chairs round it. To the left of the dinner-table there is a wall-unit which has several sections: a sideboard, a wardrobe and some shelves. At the opposite wall there is a piano and a piano stool before it. To the right there is a little table with colour TV set on it. Opposite the TV set there are two cozy armchairs. A divan-bed and a standard lamp are in the left-hand corner. In front of the armchairs there is a small round table for newspapers and magazines. There is a thick carpet on the floor. Two water-colours hung on the wall above the divan-bed. In the evening we usually draw the curtains across the windows, and a red lampshade gives a warm colour to the room.

The bedroom is smaller than the living-room and not so light as there is only one window in it. In this room there are two beds, two dressing-tables and a wardrobe. In the corner of the bedroom there is a small colors TV set. On the dressing table there is an alarm-clock and small lamp with green lamp-shade.

Our study is the smallest room in the flat, but in spice of it, it is very cozy. There isn't much furniture in it, but there are a lot of shelves full of books. It has a writing table, an armchair and a bookcase too. A small round table with cassette-recorder is standing in the right-hand corner of the study. Besides there is a small sofa near the wall opposite the bookcase. This room was my father's study, but as I grew older, it has become my room. And in my opinion it is the best room in our flat. My friends used to come to my place to have a chat or to play chess in the evening, and they say my room is very comfortable. I share their opinion.

Мой день рождения

My birthday

My birthday is in the middle of summer. I prefer to celebrate it in my flat. I do not like big noisy birthday parties. I usually invite my close friends and we have dinner in the kitchen. I have got a large rather cozy kitchen with an air conditioner. So it does not matter how hot it is outside.

As for food I prefer to make light dishes. I buy a lot of vegetables and fruit. It is not healthy to eat meat in summer, so I buy only sea products. My friends and I dislike strong alcoholic drinks. We prefer good red wines. I do not like when there is to much tasty food at a birthday party. Hosts in Russia always feel a kind of offended when guests eat and drink little. But when I try to eat and drink everything I am offered, I become so full, that I can hardly move and feel very sleepy. I do not like this situation. So I do not want my guests to fell the same. Well, I do not want them to be hungry, but I do not try to overfeed them. I cook several light dishes, but buy a lot of good wine.

I really love to talk over dinner with my friends, but not to talk after eating. So we eat tasty food, drink excellent wine and have a talk about everything. After dinner we move to the sitting room where I we continue drinking wine. We seat in the comfortable arm-chairs and listen to good blues or jazz music from my collection. This is all very relaxing.

An hour later it is high time to think about the birthday cake. I love birthday cakes, but do not understand why they are usually served right after dinner, when it is pretty difficult to feel temptation to try a birthday cake. When my guests have digested all the food, I call them to have tea with a birthday cake. I blow out the candles and we start having tea.

After tea we watch a new film on DVD. Then I suggest going for a walk to the park. There is a rather large park with a pond not very far from my place. It is not hot outside, because it is evening. We walk slowly enjoying ourselves. Then we say good buy to each other. It was a very good day. My birthday is over.

My school...

At the age of 6 or 7 boys and girls go to school. I go to school too. The number of my school is 1226. It is one of the oldest schools in Lefortovo. Our school was built in 1944. At first there was a Woman gymnasia. Later it became social school for boys and girls. And the school changed its number to 11. Some subjects were studied in English such mathematic, geography and physics. And now the number of our school is 1226. but in English we study painting, British studies, English and American literature. Our school has 4 floors. On the ground floor there is gum, a canteen, a large assembly hall. Also there are two classrooms: for junior pupils and for senior pupils, and a Deputy Director Room. Classrooms for junior pupils are situated on the first floor. On the second floor there are English rooms in the main and a staff room, biology and mathematic classrooms, the school library and a computer class. There are well-equipped chemistry and physics labs on the third floor. I go to school five days a week. Classes begin at half past eight in the morning. Each lesson last for forty minutes. Every day we have 7 or 8 lessons. The lessons are over at 10 minutes past three in the afternoon. We usually have a lot of homework and it takes me several hours to do it. Sometimes I have to sit up to write a composition, to prepare a report or to learn poem by heart. After classes many pupils don't go home right away. We have out-of-classes activities. We have guitar club, choir and others. I take part in the volleyball club. My favorite subject is Russian. I like to learn new rules and to write compositions. I like it when we discussed something interesting to us. I like my class. I always felt a home there. I am at good terms with my classmates and we often spend out free time together.

Моя семья

Genealogical tree

To know one’s family tree today in Russia is a kind of an entertainment or fashion. We think it no more than just fun. Family tree information has become a popular, though expensive, present. But we never consider this information important for us. Now we hopefully know something about our parents and grandparents. And quite few of us are eager to find out anything about at least our great grandparents. In fact before the October revolution people of different classes almost always knew their family trees very well; not to say about merchants and the nobility for whom that was a must. We almost never question ourselves why for people in other countries it is absolutely natural to know a lot about their ancestors. I think that there are good reasons for finding out who your ancestors were. Not knowing one’s family tree is like being without roots. Just imagine that among your ancestors could be persons, who lived very interesting lives, or even were famous. And it is not necessary to belong to a noble family. It is an excellent opportunity to feel proud of someone of your family! Why is it vitally important to know the history of your country and world history? Today we live in a fast moving world, and we think that all the problems and difficulties that we face are totally new. This is absolutely wrong. There is a very good line from ABBA’s song: “The history book on the shelf is always repeating itself.” I absolutely agree with this statement. Nothing is new. The history being made today is just a slightly updated variant of the history made by our ancestors. History is not only referred to our past, but mostly to our today and future. History is built up of events and relationships of peoples, nations and countries. How can we live and communicate with each other not knowing how our ancestors did this? So this is the key. Lives of people from our family tree is a reduced model of the country’s or world’s history. Is there something good and useful that can we pick up for ourselves? Surely there is something. You can not only be proud of your ancestors’ achievements, but also look up to them. For example, my great great grandfather was a famous and rich merchant. He was not only lucky but very clever. He knew how to build up a successful business. But apart from that he was very honest as with his business partners, so with everyone else. He never had business with dishonest people. I try to be like my ancestor – honest in everything and with everybody. I consider a genealogical tree to be a real treasure that everybody should find.

My family

I think that a family is the most important thing for every person. Family are the people that always love you, support you and help you. For me it is impossible to live without my family. My family is rather large. There are: my parents, brother, sister and grandparents.

My father is a plastic surgeon; he helps people become more beautiful. He is a professional. My father does his work very well and gets a very good salary. My mother is a housewife. She looks after the house and us, the kids. Mother makes very tasty breakfasts and dinners. Our mother is very kind, but strict to us. She always checks how we do our homework. Mother arranges our free time, so that we cannot just fool around.

My elder brother, Jason, is a student of the medical faculty. He wants to become a good surgeon, like our father. Besides he is also a member of the local theatre club. He plays main parts in several plays.

My sister, Jenny, is finishing school this year. But she has not yet made up her mind about her future profession. On one hand she loves animals and can become a vet, on the other hand she is very good at mathematics and knows some complex computer programs. Maybe she will have a year off to think over her future possibilities.

As for me, I have always loved music. I can play the guitar and piano very well. I love all kinds of music, but mostly I prefer rock. After school I am planning to enter the music college, because I want to become a professional musician. Parallel with that I want to have my own rock band.

Our grand parents are scientists. Grandfather is a historian and grandmother is a linguist. They give lectures in different universities and write serious books. We all get on with each other very well.

Every one in our family is rather busy, but we always look forward to a possibility to spend some time together. My family means a lot to me.

Моё хобби

My hobby

Hobby is what a person likes to do in his spare time. Hobbies differ like tastes. If you have chosen a hobby according to your character and taste you are lucky because your life becomes more interesting. The most popular hobby is doing things. It includes a wide variety of activities from gardening to traveling, from chess to volleyball. Both grown-ups and children are fond of playing different computer games. This hobby is becoming more and more popular. Making things include drawing, painting, handicrafts. Many people collect something - coins, stamps, compact discs, toys, books. Some collections have some value. Rich people often collect paintings, rare things and other art objects. Often such private collections are given to museums, libraries.

As for me, I like to listen to music. 3 months ago my parents bought me a compact disc player and I decided to collect compact discs. I like different music, it should be good. I collect discs of my favourite groups and singers. I carefully study the information printed on discbooklets. I try to find everything about my favourite singers. Also I like to watch music programmes on TV. I want to keep up with the news in the world of music.

Of course, I like to spend my spare time with my friends. We talk about all sorts of things ( politics, teachers, girls). We discuss films, books, TV programmes. In fine weather we like to be in the open air. We find a nice place somewhere in the forest. We make a fire, bake potatoes and have a lot of fun. When the weather is bad, my friends come to my place. We have a good time together.
